Director of Research — Capabilities
Lead TAL Corp's capabilities research — the foundational model research that pushes the frontier of what AI can understand and do.
About This Role
Building aligned AGI requires both safety and capability. The Director of Capabilities Research leads the team pushing TAL models to the frontier of intelligence.
Responsibilities
- ▸Own the capabilities research roadmap — architecture, pretraining, and post-training
- ▸Lead a team of 10–20 research scientists and engineers
- ▸Drive research into scaling laws, emergent capabilities, and novel training paradigms
- ▸Manage allocation of compute resources across research experiments
- ▸Partner with alignment research to ensure capability improvements are safety-tested
- ▸Represent TAL Corp at NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR
Requirements
- ▸PhD in Machine Learning or Computer Science
- ▸8+ years ML research with strong publication record at top venues
- ▸3+ years managing research teams
- ▸Deep expertise in LLM pretraining, architecture, and evaluation
- ▸Experience managing large-scale training runs
Nice to Have
- ▸Prior research leadership at a frontier AI lab
- ▸Track record of research that has directly improved model capabilities
- ▸Experience with compute-optimal training and scaling law research
